"Mastering the Essay" an online course offered by AllLearn
Have a passion for writing? Know a high school student who is preparing for college? This month, Yale and AllLearn are pleased to announce an innovative online high school writing program, designed by Yale's Michael Milburn. "Mastering the Essay" is a six-week summer writing workshop that gives high school students a unique opportunity to work with world-class, college-level writing instructors. This course helps students get a jump on their college application essays and on the kinds of writing they'll be asked to do once they enter college. Featuring extensive one-on-one instructor feedback as well as peer review, "Mastering the Essay" teaches students how to write three kinds of essays - arguments, personal narratives, and profiles- and stresses the essential skills of composing, critiquing, and revising. Students will sharpen their critical thinking skills by reading and discussing the work of respected contemporary essayists. They will also gain confidence in the workshop format, which is widely used in college, and in the interactive software they will almost certainly encounter during their academic careers. While no grades are assigned, students receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course, which can be mentioned in their college applications. To learn more about the course, and to read student and parent responses to the 2004 pilot program, please visit http://www.alllearn.org/email/index.jsp?T=yale0503&HS=1.
